HALFWAY HOME: Cultivating Second Chances for Ex-Convicts

Introduction

This concept outlines a community-based vocational training program for ex-convicts, equipping them with practical agricultural skills to foster self-reliance, reduce recidivism, and accelerate reintegration. Through sustainable vegetable production, irrigation installation, greenhouse farming, value addition, and business management, HALFWAY HOME transforms released prisoners into productive contributors to Ghana’s food system.

Objectives

  • Equip ex-convicts with hands-on skills in modern, sustainable agriculture.
  • Develop proficiency in installing and maintaining irrigation and greenhouse systems.
  • Teach postharvest handling and value-addition techniques for vegetables.
  • Build foundational knowledge in farm enterprise planning, cooperative models, and basic bookkeeping.
  • Create viable income pathways, enabling graduates to thrive in their communities.

Program Overview

Target Participants and Duration

The program supports ex-convicts who have finished their sentences and are looking for stable jobs. Participants should have basic literacy skills and a dedication to personal development. The program lasts 32 weeks and is divided into five connected modules. Weekly classroom theory sessions are held at the training center, while hands-on workshops happen on the 70-acre cooperative farm, which is provided through the partnership with the Ghana Prisons Ministry.
